Fellows of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FAPS) for 2024 are announced

2nd August 2024

A Fellowship is the highest and most prestigious honour awarded by the APS to members each year in recognition of their contribution to the Academy and their accomplishment and impact in any sector of the pharmaceutical sciences. This year we have again received a large number of applications and are pleased to announce the successful applicants as follows:

Professor Barbara Conway
Head of Pharmacy, University of Huddersfield, UK

“I am grateful of the support and mentoring that the Academy provide for post-graduate researchers and early career academics. The last APS conference I attended was in Belfast in 2022 and I thoroughly appreciated being afforded the opportunity to present to peers but especially to the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists. I was able to support a significant number of students to attend in 2023 and was delighted to be able to support the decision to bring the conference to the University of Huddersfield for 2024. We are very proud of our stance on widening participation and I have encouraged an inclusive culture for our undergraduates, postgraduates and academics to enable them to achieve their best in a supportive environment, that embraces and celebrates their achievements. Therefore, I applied for a fellowship to coincide with the conference in my own institution to hopefully inspire our research students and academics to continue to share and celebrate their own achievements.”

Mike Hannay
Chief Product and Supply Chain Officer, Bicycle Therapeutics, UK

“I am proud to have spent my career in pharmaceutical science and have always seen the FAPS as the pinnacle of achievement and recognition in pharmaceutical science. I am honoured to have been awarded fellowship of the APSGB. The APSGB plays a leading role in supporting the development of pharmaceutical science and pharmaceutical scientists. I have been fortunate to work with many great pharmaceutical scientists who all play a vital part in bringing new medicines to patients. Becoming a Fellow is very exciting and I look forward to continuing to support the APSGB, members and fellows.”

Anthony J Hickey
Professor Emeritus of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics, and Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering, Eshelman School of Pharmacy and The School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA

I have long been an advocate for the quality and contributions of UK pharmaceutical sciences to knowledge and understanding in the field. Being an APS Fellow offers me a platform from which to more formally advocate for the APS and UK pharmaceutical sciences broadly in the international community. Through further engagement with students and researchers I hope to promote scientific and professional interactions that would be mutually beneficial and serve to accelerate the exchange of knowledge.

I consider it a great honour to become an APS Fellow. It is personally meaningful to be recognized by the national organization representing a field of endeavour directly related to my education and training.

Professor Vitaliy Khutoryanskiy
Professor of Formulation Science, Reading School of Pharmacy, University of Reading, UK

“Becoming a Fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences is a significant professional achievement that recognises my contributions to this field, including research, teaching and mentoring pharmaceutical researchers. I am deeply honoured to have been awarded FAPS. This recognition signifies an important milestone in my professional journey and reinforces my commitment to advancing the field of pharmaceutical sciences. I am grateful for the acknowledgment of my contributions and look forward to continuing my efforts in driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and contributing to the growth and excellence of our scientific community.

Michael Leane, PhD
Associate Scientific Director, Bristol Myers Squibb, Moreton, UK

“Becoming a Fellow of the APS is a huge honour for me: I consider it a milestone in my career. The APS gives tremendous support to pharmaceutical scientists providing them with experiences that they cannot gain elsewhere. The technical focus groups offer early exposure to scientific leadership giving the opportunity to network with industrial and academic peers in the UK, whilst UKPharmSci is a leading showcase for world class science. In my time in the APS, I have taken advantage of all these resources and worked alongside some great people. As a Fellow, I will encourage others to do likewise whilst promoting diversity to ensure under-represented groups can participate in the pharmaceutical sciences. I will also continue to develop the Manufacturing Classification System initiative under APS sponsorship whilst working to build links with our peers in Germany through the APV.”

Professor Nguyá»…n T. K. Thanh MAE FRSC FInstP FAPS FRSB FIMMM
Chair in Nanomaterials, Vice Dean for Innovation and Enterprise, Faculty of Maths & Phys. Sci.

“My research related to Pharmaceutical Sciences, but now I would like to engage even deeper with Pharmaceutical Sciences community as our research in combination of chemotherapy and magnetic hyperthermia cancer treatment is moving further along the translational pathway. I am delighted to be awarded this Fellowship to join the outstanding pharmaceutical sciences community, not only in academia, but also the chance to engage with the pharmaceutical industry which is very important for our research in developing magnetic hyperthermia anticancer agents using interdisciplinary approaches.”
