Reflections from the APS Conference in Newcastle 2026 by the Science Chair

APS was an inspiring, energising and deeply collaborative conference. Over the course of three remarkable days, we came together as a community to celebrate the very best of pharmaceutical science and, just as importantly, the people who make our discipline so vibrant and impactful.

From the outstanding contributions of our Focus Groups and early-career researchers to our plenary and award lectures, the breadth and quality of the science on display were truly exceptional. We explored everything from fundamental scientific discovery to the complex challenges of formulation, delivery, manufacturing and translation to patient benefit. What stood out throughout was not only the excellence of the research, but the shared commitment, curiosity and generosity that define our community.

The conference also gave us the opportunity to recognise the APS award winners and our new Fellows. Their leadership, dedication and achievements continue to advance our discipline and inspire those who follow in their footsteps. On a personal note, it was especially meaningful to see my colleagues and long-standing friends, Hannah Batchelor and Ryan Donnelly, recognised for their outstanding contributions to APS and to the wider scientific community. Their achievements are richly deserved, and their example has inspired so many of us throughout our careers.

As Science Chair, I would like to offer my sincere and heartfelt thanks to Kofi, Sara, Milan and the wider APS Board. It has been a privilege to work alongside them in bringing PharmSci 2026 to life. Conferences of this scale and quality are built on countless acts of commitment, patience, and professionalism, many of which take place behind the scenes and often go unseen. Their dedication, attention to detail and unwavering support have been instrumental in making this meeting such a success.

The quality of the scientific programme, the warmth of the atmosphere and the seamless experience enjoyed by delegates throughout the week are a testament to their efforts.

As I reflect on the past three days, I am reminded that while we gathered to celebrate scientific excellence, we also celebrated something equally important: our community. The connections we strengthen, the ideas we share, the collaborations we build and the friendships we maintain are what give our science its enduring impact.

Thank you to our speakers, session chairs, delegates, sponsors, exhibitors, and the APS team. Your enthusiasm, expertise and generosity created an event that was not only scientifically outstanding, but genuinely memorable.

As I look back over the 26 years I’ve been involved with APS, this conference in its various guises, and the journey the Academy has taken, I am reminded of the words of that infamous DJ, Fatboy Slim
