She leads her research group ‘The Raimi-Abraham Group’ which focuses on solving pharmaceutical challenges in infectious diseases with a particular interest in malaria\, tuberculosis\, and latent and asymptomatic infections. Dr Raimi-Abraham is the founder and host of Monday Science (selected in the top 25 Best UK Science Podcast by Feedspot)\, a weekly podcast that discusses the latest in Science\, Health and Technology. Dr Raimi-Abraham is the first graduate of the University of East Anglia School of Pharmacy to be awarded a PhD and was the 2018 recipient of the Outstanding Woman in STEM Precious Award. Dr Raimi-Abraham is a Board Member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Great Britain (APS). More recently\, Dr Raimi-Abraham was the recipient of the 2022 APS Emerging Scientist Award. Overall\, the content of this special series has been carefully crafted to complement the existing APS portfolio and the Emerging Technologies Focus Group hot topics. \n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n21 April 2022 – 13.00-14.00 UK Time/14.00-15.00 CET\n\n \n\n\n3D Bioprinting applications in drug discovery and development\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers and Chairs\nAleksandar Atanasov  \nAleks obtained his BSc in Biochemistry and his MSc in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine from University College London. During his Master’s\, he explored bioactive glasses – more widely used in bone regeneration – in the context of chronic wound healing. There\, he gained an in-depth understanding of the processes and pathways that define skin recovery\, scarring\, and regeneration. This led to Aleks’ current position at the Healthcare Technologies Institute at the University of Birmingham as a PhD student with the lifETIME CDT. His project entails creating a 3D substitute to model normal skin\, wound healing\, and scarring. The aim is to recapitulate the tissue\, in terms of its structural complexity\, its mechanical properties\, and its local biochemical profiles. As well as 3D bioprinting techniques\, Aleks’ project also features solutions for spatial and temporal control over the release of growth factors and cytokines\, courtesy of Cell Guidance System Ltd. Combined\, they give the project the potential to push the boundaries of 3D skin models\, and make them an even more versatile and powerful tool for both research and medical applications. \n\n\nAleksandar Atanasov  \nPhD Student \nEPSRC CDT in Engineered Tissues for Discovery\, Industry and Medicine (lifETIME) \nHealthcare Technologies Institute\, \nUniversity of Birmingham \n\nDr Deepak Kalaskar is Associate Professor of Bioengineering at University College London (UCL) Division of Surgery and Interventional Sciences. His research focuses on design and development of novel medical devices\, implants and regenerative therapies using 3D technologies (3D imaging\, scanning\, and printing) for various Musculoskeletal conditions.  \nFollowing his PhD from the University of Manchester (UK)\, he worked at various Universities in UK and Belgium in stem cells\, nanomaterials\, medical device development and bioprinting before joining UCL in 2012.   \nCurrently\, he is co-chair and director of the postgraduate MSc course in Burns\, Plastic and Reconstructive surgery at University College London (UCL) and the Royal Free Hospital\, London. He is actively involved in clinically translational research. He is working closely with number of industries for the development of new products and processes required for clinical translation. \nHe is the editor of 3 books in the field of 3D printing in Medicine (Elsevier)\, Nanomedicine (Open Press) and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (UCL Press). He has also contributed to over 100 scientific publications in internationally peer reviewed journals.  \nHe has contributed to studies and policy documents in 3D printing & 3D Bioprinting and reviewed them for UK patent office\, UK Parliamentary Department of Science & Technology (POST). In 2016\, he started a PhD with Dr Aurora Cruz-Cabeza in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Science at the University of Manchester. His focus was on the crystallisation and the characterisation of organic single crystals. His work included many aspects of crystallisation and material sciences such as polymorphism and mechanical properties of single crystals. As a result\, he also worked in close collaboration with Prof. Brian Derby from the Department of Materials at the University of Manchester. He successfully graduated at the end of 2020. He then started a new role as a Particle Scientist at Concept Life Sciences before joining AstraZeneca for a similar role from March 2021. He obtained his degree in Physics from the University of Leeds and his PhD in microfluidic systems for blood cell analysis from the University of Hertfordshire. He was central in the establishment of the facilities for microfluidic rapid prototyping at UH. \nIan leads the Microfluidics and Microengineering Research Group and is also Director of the Centre for Research in Biodetection Technologies\, a multidisciplinary research centre concerned with real-time monitoring\, sampling\, and analysis of waterborne and airborne pathogens for protection of human health. \nHe has over 25 years of experience leading multi-partner\, multi-disciplinary lab-on-a-chip projects focussing on applied microfluidic technologies and integrated automated systems for use in bioscience applications. His work focusses on applied research and development for delivery of tangible prototype devices and systems for commercial and government organisations. His areas of expertise span continuous flow microfluidics\, and digital droplet microfluidics for cell handling and identification. \nHis current research focuses on microfluidic techniques for application areas including EWOD sample recovery and LAMP diagnostics with EWOD for healthcare and biowarfare\, too cell identification and sorting for food security and crop protection. \n  \n \nEllis Smith PhD Student\, University of Strathclyde graduated in 2018 from the University of Glasgow\, with a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. She is currently pursuing a 4-year PhD in microfluidics at the University of Strathclyde\, investigating the mechanisms causing abnormal proliferation of vascular cells and the cell sub-populations involved. The aim of her project is to develop a new methodology to continuously track the functional changes that individual vascular cells undergo in response to various stimuli and drug treatments.

He then joined the group of Prof. Parrinello at ETH Zurich first as a postdoc and the as Oberassistent (2002-2009).\nAt ETHZ he focused on the time-scale problem of molecular dynamics simulations and the calculation of free energies associated to complex biological events\, contributing to the development of methods such as Metadynamics\, Parallel-Tempering Metadynamics (PT- MetaD) and the path-like collective variables method (PCV). \nIn 2009 he joined the Spanish National Cancer Research Center in Madrid- Spain as the leader of the Biophysics group. There he continued the development of computational methods\, including a method to predict binding kinetics (PRL 2013). He also combined simulations with NMR experiments to better understand the mode of action of cancer-causing mutations and allosteric drugs. \nIn 2013 he joined University College London as full professor. Research highlights from this period include the development of a method to predict previously unknown cryptic binding pocket\, which was used to design allosteric modulators of FGFR (Cancer Cell\, JACS 2016); the development of a computational approach combining evolutionary principles with a physics- based coarse-grained model to predict protein structure and dynamics (PNAS 2015); the clarification of an unexpected moonlighting activity by Glutamine Synthetase (Nature 2018). In 2020 FLG also joined the University of Geneva as full professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (while retaining his Chair at UCL). \nThe current research focus of the group is the development of simulations-based methods to understand the regulation of drug targets and design new therapeutic agents. In this context\, the group used enhanced sampling simulations to clarify the activation mechanism of the glucagon receptor (PNAS 2020) and the effect of oncogenic mutations on the dynamics of EGFR (ELife 2021). \nFLG is the editor in chief of Frontiers in Biological Modeling and Simulation; director of CECAM JC Maxwell node and a member of the Faculty of 1000. \nHe has an h-index of 49\, more than 9300 citations (Google Scholar) and more than 120 peer- reviewed publications\, including several in leading journals such as Nature\, Cancer Cell\, Chem. Rev.\, Acc. Chem. Res.\, Rep. Prog. Phys\, Sci. Adv.\, Nat. Comm.\, Proc. Nat. Acad. USA\, J. Am. Chem. Soc.\, Angew. Chem. and Phys. Rev. Lett. FLG organized several international conferences\, workshops and tutorials on allosteric regulation and biomolecular simulations. \nHis research group is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation\, EU Horizon Europe and EPSRC. He actively collaborates with AstraZeneca\, J&J and UCB.

She completed a BSc. in Biochemistry with industrial experience at the University of Manchester (2018). During her undergraduate degree\, she spent a year working on a clinical research project in a cancer immunology lab at the Mayo Clinic\, Florida. Following this she carried out a final year project in computational biology\, using machine learning to predict protein-protein interactions and protein functions in the model organism S. cerevisiae. Her current research involves predicting melanoma patient outcomes through the integration and analysis of molecular\, cellular and clinical data\, using AI methodologies.\n \n\nProfessor Ola Engkvist is head of Molecular AI in Discovery Sciences\, AstraZeneca R&D. He did his PhD in computational chemistry at Lund University followed by a postdoc at Cambridge University.  After working for two biotech companies he joined AstraZeneca in 2004. He currently lead the Molecular AI department\, where the focus is to develop novel methods for ML/AI in drug design \, productionalize the methods and apply the methods to AstraZeneca’s small molecules drug discovery portfolio. His main research interests are deep learning based molecular de novo design\, synthetic route prediction and large scale molecular property predictions. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He is adjunct professor in machine learning and AI for drug design at Chalmers University of Technology and a trustee of Cambridge Crystallographic Data Center.

By working closely with industrial partners as well as cross-discipline collaborators\, her research has contributed to product development and innovations in many industrial sectors\, from pharmaceutical\, medical device to food\, cosmetic\, agri-tech and sustainable packaging. Recently through the support of UEA Health and Social Care Partners\, she founded Point of Care 3D Printing Research Group to allow the scientists from UEA and other academic collaborators to work closely with clinicians\, pharmacists\, and patients in Norfolk and Suffolk to identify and develop efficient and cost-effective uses of 3D printing in acute hospital environments.

He obtained his PhD degree from Nanyang Technological University\, Singapore\, and then worked as a Research Fellow in Singapore-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alliance\, and a Research Associate in University of Cambridge. He was a lecturer in Heriot-Watt University\, Edinburgh\, UK\, and then a Reader in Thin Film Centre in University of West of Scotland\, Glasgow\, UK\, before moving to Newcastle\, UK in 2015. \nHe has extensive experience in smart thin films/materials\, biomedical microdevices\, energy materials\, lab-on-chip\, micromechanics\, MEMS\, nanotechnology\, sensors and microfluidics. He has established a worldwide reputation from his pioneer research work on shape memory films\, piezoelectric thin films\, nanostructured composite/films for MEMS\, sensors/ actuators\, and renewable energy applications. \nHe published over 400 science citation index (SCI) journal papers (including Nat. Comm.\, Prog. Mater Sci\, Adv. Mater.\, ACS Nano\, Nano Energy\, Nano Lett.\, Mater Horizons\, Chem. Mater.\, J Mater Chem A\, Advanced Drug Delivery Review\, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews)\, two books\, 20 book chapters\, and over 120 conference papers. His current SCI H-index is 56 with over 13 K citations\, and his Google scholar H-index is 64 with over 17K citations (up to June 2021). \nHe is associate editors/editorial board members for seven international journals including Scientific Report. He is regular journal paper reviewers for more than 40 journals\, has co-organized 12 international conferences worldwide\, and co-edited six special issues for different journals. \n  \nMs Eve McGlynn  graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2019 with an MEng in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. As part of the Microelectronics Lab in the James Watt School of Engineering\, she is primarily involved in nanofabrication of flexible polymer probes for recording and brain stimulation. Her work in the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre is supplemented by a research interest in magnetoelectric power transfer for biomedical applications.

His research objectives has been and are to develop novel strategies of tissue drug targeting and delivery that is expected to improve the clinical use and efficacy of drugs in various diseases\, such as metabolic and cancer diseases. He has been the Principal Investigator in an extensive collaboration with Food Drug & Administration\, USA\, University of Michigan\, USA\, and Medical Product Agency\, Sweden during 1992-2000 to develop the novel FDA regulatory guideline named the Biopharmaceutics Classification System. He has established an extensive human pharmacokinetic database with jejunal permeability values for 45 drug compounds that today is widely used in academia and pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Lennernäs has been the chairman for numerous international conferences. He serves as reviewer for several scientific journals in clinical pharmacology and pharmaceutical science with a focus on drug delivery and pharmacokinetics. His work had led to more 230 peer-reviewed publications\, 330 invited lectures and more than 350 submitted presentations at scientific meetings. She is now affiliated with the Fraunhofer Institute of Translational Medicine and Pharmacology in Frankfurt and continuing her research on oral absorption of small molecules. Professor Dressman has written over 300 papers\, books and chapters as well as co-authoring 15 patents\, and is best known for pioneering biorelevant dissolution testing. She is a Fellow of AAPS\, APV\, APSTJ and FIP\, as well as receiving numerous other awards \n\n\n\nDr Angela Effinger\nDr. Angela Effinger studied pharmacy at the Albert-Ludwigs University Freiburg until 2015. After finishing her studies\, she joined the PEARRL project and started her PhD studies at the University of Bath with placements at the MHRA in London and Pfizer in Sandwich. During her PhD\, she developed in vitro and in silico tools to predict drug product performance in patients with gastrointestinal diseases. His current role as Associate Scientific Director is focused on the development of oral solid dosage forms from the pre-clinical stage through to product registration. Stuart has a particular interest in paediatric drug product development and is an SME leading and supporting activities across the company and externally. Before joining GSK in 2016\, Ranjit also was Post- Doctoral Researcher at The University of Sheffield (2014-16) where he was actively engaged in the research activities in the area of Continuous Pharmaceutical Granulation with special attention to process development. His current focus is on platform and process development of dry granulation operation (roller compaction). This involves developing small scale prediction tools\, modelling framework and application of tools into the projects. The work also involves technical troubleshooting and process de-risking \n\nDr Kai Lee-Pfizer\nKai is a Principal Scientist and is part of the Drug Product Design group based in Sandwich in the UK. His responsibility in Pfizer is to support the delivery of the company’s mid to late-stage R&D and marketed product portfolio. He is currently responsible for designing the formulation and the manufacturing process of oral solid dosage forms for the clinical and commercial drug product which includes transferring the process to the commercial manufacturing organization. His specialty and main interest area is drug product manufacturing science particularly on continuous processing for example continuous powder mixing technology\, continuous twin-screw wet granulation\, process analytical tools\, and the application of Big Data and process modelling to optimize the manufacturing process. Kai is a Chemical Engineer by training and he has obtained his BEng and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Birmingham. His Ph.D. research was on Continuous Twin Screw Granulation and using PEPT application to understand the granulation mechanism of the process. He joined Pfizer 6 years ago as a Process Scientist and is currently the SME of continuous processing. \nDr Jim Litster\, The University of Sheffield\nJim Litster is Vice President and Head of Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sheffield\, following previous academic appointments at Purdue University (2007-2015) and The University of Queensland (1987-2007). His research area is Particulate Products and Processes. His research focuses on production of particles and particulate delivery forms with well controlled size and morphology from sub-micron to millimeter scale using processes such as wet granulation\, crystallization and spherical agglomeration. I then spent two years working for GSK within a discovery drug metabolism environment before moving to Pfizer in Sandwich\, UK\, to set up a Pharmaceutical Sciences Discovery support group.\nI led the Research Pharmaceutical Sciences group and the Global Research Formulation Network providing formulation and drug delivery support to all programs from early Research through to PhII Proof of Concept clinical studies. A qualified pharmacist he gained his MPharm degree from Queen’s University Belfast followed by a split industry/hospital pre-registration placement with Whitehall International and Brighton General Hospital. After his pre-registration training\, Liam returned to Queen’s to undertake his PhD before taking up an EPSRC funded postdoctoral position at the School of Pharmacy\, University of London focussed on using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy to gain insight into penetration enhancement of drugs across skin. In 2008 Liam joined the University of Hertfordshire\, he became Head of Pharmaceutics in 2014 and took on his current role in 2019. \nLiam’s research interests largely focus on improving drug delivery to the skin\, understanding how the clinical use of topical formulations can impact on drug delivery and characterising the skin barrier. He obtained a PhD studentship from the Argentinean National Research Council\, where he also worked as a postdoctoral researcher for 2 years until 2019. During this stage\, he obtained national and international funds in competitive calls to visit the University of the Basque Country (Spain) and the University of Pavia (Italy) where he was involved within leading groups in gene therapy and wound healing\, respectively. In 2019 he started working as a Research Fellow at Queen’s University Belfast\, where he participated in multiple projects related to the transdermal administration of drugs using microneedle array patches. During his doctoral and postdoctoral works\, Dr Paredes worked intensively in improving the oral and transdermal absorption of poorly soluble drugs by means the formulation of drug nanocrystals. The focus of her research is the development of a range of multifunctional nanoparticles and their translation into medical therapies and agricultural products. \nSpeakers\nDr Jonathan Coulter\, Queens’ University\, Belfast.\nDr Coulter is a Reader working within the Nanomedicine and Biotherapeutics research group at the School of Pharmacy\, Queen’s University Belfast. His research has always had a focus on developing strategies to overcome treatment resistance in cancer\, with a specific focus on radiotherapy. His work has spanned approaches that include the use of suicide gene therapy and more recently exploiting the unique physical properties of high atomic number nanoparticles as radiosensitisers. Recent iterations have been developed as biologically active formulations\, designed to overcome tumour microenvironment properties which are known to confer treatment resistance\, in addition to the core particle acting as a radiation dose modifier. This presentation aims to outline some of the successes we have experienced in this space while looking to spark discussion around the key challenges that have limited clinical translation to date. ​ \n\nProfessor Steve Rannard-University of Liverpool\nSteve Rannard is a materials chemist and\, after 16 years in industry (Cookson\, Courtaulds\, Unilever)\, joined the University of Liverpool (UK) as a Professor of Chemistry in 2007. His medical research focuses materials science onto unmet clinical needs (oral\, long-acting and topical administration) through scalable nanoparticle platforms. In addition\, considerable non-clinical work targets the improvement usage and efficacy of poorly water-soluble compounds in a range of market sectors and the development of new polymer synthesis techniques. He has co-founded four start-up companies\, the recent Centre of Excellence for Long-acting Therapeutics (CELT Liverpool) and two national societies acting as a committee member for the Recent Appointees in Polymer Science (Macro Group UK) and vice-Chair of the British Society for Nanomedicine for nearly 10 years. Kim\, UT – MD Anderson Cancer Center\, Houston \nAs a Neurosurgeon-Scientist\, Dr. Kim’s laboratory takes a multidisciplinary approach to the research of solid tumors with a specific focus on malignant primary and metastatic brain tumors. Pankaj received his PhD in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 2003\, which was followed by a postdoctoral research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interest includes application of computational techniques like CFD\, DEM and PBM to the modeling and scale-up of pharmaceutical processes and unit operations. He started his industrial career at GSK where he developed computational model for dry powder inhaler. Ana’s main role with BMS is to extract information from material characterization data sets to support product teams in the design and troubleshooting of formulations.
